Police in the Federal Capital Territory have arrested a man accused of keeping his sister confined in a locked room for more than 16 months.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, disclosed the incident while addressing journalists in Abuja on Monday. According to the police, officers responded to a distress call on June 12, 2026, reporting that a 36-year-old woman, Grace Aniekuoku, was being unlawfully detained by her brother, Chinedu Aniekuoku.
Police officers from the Katampe Division were immediately dispatched to the residence. Authorities said the suspect initially refused to allow officers access to the property, prompting the police to exercise their legal powers to enter the premises and rescue the victim.
Upon gaining access, officers discovered the woman in a severely neglected condition. She was immediately rescued and taken to a medical facility, where she is currently receiving treatment.
According to preliminary investigations, the victim's son had reportedly been taken away by the suspect about two years ago. Police believe the woman may have been kept in confinement to prevent her from making inquiries about the child's whereabouts.
The Commissioner of Police stated that efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the missing child while investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the case.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to face prosecution once investigations are completed.
Authorities have assured the public that the case will be thoroughly investigated and that anyone found responsible for criminal acts connected to the incident will be brought to justice.
