An Ogun State Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, has sentenced eight residents to community service after finding them guilty of indiscriminate waste disposal within the city.
The offenders were arrested by officials of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) and prosecuted on charges related to illegal dumping of refuse in public places. According to prosecutors, the individuals were caught between 6:15 a.m. and 8:05 a.m. dumping waste along roads in Isale-Igbein, Car-Wash, and Abiola Way areas of Abeokuta.
The court heard that the actions created unhealthy environmental conditions, including offensive odours, the breeding of disease-carrying insects, and increased risks of flooding and environmental degradation. Authorities said the offences violated provisions of the Ogun State Public Health Law and the Ogun State Waste Management Authority Law.
Delivering judgment, the court found all eight defendants guilty and ordered them to perform community service within the Isabo Magistrate Court premises. The court also directed that their photographs be displayed on the court's notice board during the period of service.
In addition, the judge warned that any future conviction for a similar offence could result in imprisonment without the option of a fine.
Reacting to the ruling, the Special Adviser to the Governor and Managing Director of OGWAMA, Farouk Akintunde, praised the judgment and described it as a strong step toward enforcing environmental sanitation laws in the state.
He reiterated the agency's commitment to tackling illegal waste disposal and urged residents to make use of approved waste management services. He also warned that individuals who continue to dump refuse indiscriminately would face prosecution.
The latest ruling comes just weeks after another court sentenced 14 people for similar environmental offences, highlighting the state's ongoing efforts to improve sanitation and protect public health.
