Ukraine launched one of its most significant drone attacks on Moscow this week, sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky and striking key energy infrastructure in the Russian capital.
The attack reportedly set part of Moscow's largest oil refinery on fire, with explosions damaging fuel storage facilities and highlighting Ukraine's growing ability to bring the war deep into Russian territory. The strike comes as Kyiv seeks to increase pressure on Russia both militarily and diplomatically.
At the same time, Ukraine received a major boost from its Western allies. Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations issued a statement reaffirming their support for Ukraine during a summit in France. The show of unity came despite comments from U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting that the United States no longer sees ending the conflict as a top priority.
Ukraine also moved forward in its bid to join the European Union, with membership negotiations officially beginning this week. European leaders further announced that a previously approved €90 billion financial support package would start being released this month, while additional military aid commitments worth billions of dollars were also confirmed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said international partners remain united in their belief that Russia can be pressured into serious negotiations. He accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of having no genuine interest in peace and stressed that collective support from allies remains crucial.
European leaders echoed that sentiment. Ursula von der Leyen described the recent developments as a sign that momentum is shifting in Ukraine's favor, while Gitanas Nausėda called the Moscow strikes a potential turning point in the war.
Russia downplayed the significance of the attacks, with Kremlin officials insisting that pressure tactics would not change Moscow's position. However, Russian energy officials acknowledged disruptions at some fuel facilities following recent strikes on oil infrastructure.
The attack has fueled growing confidence inside Ukraine, where many now believe that sustained military pressure and continued Western backing can strengthen Kyiv's position in any future negotiations. Social media users even circulated images jokingly depicting President Zelensky holding a winning hand of cards, a reference to earlier claims that Ukraine lacked leverage in the conflict.
Despite the optimism, fighting remains intense. Ukraine continued launching drones toward Moscow on Friday, while Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities also caused civilian casualties. Both sides remain locked in a conflict that shows little sign of ending soon, even as diplomatic efforts continue in the background.
