--> Democracy Day: Police deploy personnel to ensure peaceful celebrations in Delta June 12, 2026 3:25 pm File photo: Police officer Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has ordered massive deployment of personnel and operational assets across the state “as part of the Command’s efforts to ensure the protection of lives and property, maintain public order and guarantee a peaceful Democracy Day celebration”. This was contained in a statement issued by the police public relations officer for Delta state Command, SP Bright Edafe, in Warri on Friday. Edafe noted that the security arrangement included the deployment of conventional police personnel, tactical teams, intelligence operatives, and undercover officers to strategic locations, critical infrastructure, recreational centres, places of worship, major highways and other public spaces. Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders were also directed to intensify visibility policing, intelligence gathering, and confidence-building patrols within their respective areas of responsibility. He said, “The Commissioner of Police assured residents of the State of adequate security before, during, and after the 2026 Democracy Day celebration”. He further urges members of the public to cooperate with security personnel deployed across the State and to remain law-abiding throughout the celebration. While wishing residents and visitors a peaceful Democracy Day celebration, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, reassured the public of “the Command’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property and warned criminal elements against taking advantage of the festivities to perpetrate crime, as the Command remains resolute and fully prepared to deal decisively with any threat to public peace and security”. Democracy Day is a national public holiday in Nigeria, marking the restoration of democracy in 1999. It has been observed annually since 2000, originally on May 29 until the date was changed to June 12 in 2018.
