Family of Six Among Victims of Benue Boat Accident, NIWA Confirms

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has confirmed that a family of six was among the victims of a tragic boat accident that occurred over the weekend in Benue State.

The incident, which took place near Makurdi, claimed the lives of 11 people and has left the local community in mourning. According to NIWA's Area Manager in Makurdi, Andrew Ndahi, the family was among those who lost their lives when the boat capsized while transporting passengers.

Ndahi disclosed the information after a fact-finding visit to Daudu-Dauda settlement, an island community located behind the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University area of Makurdi.

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident to determine the cause and identify measures that could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Boat accidents remain a recurring challenge in several riverine communities across Nigeria, often linked to overloading, poor safety practices, and inadequate water transport facilities.

The latest incident has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and increased awareness among waterway users to reduce the risk of future accidents.
