Pilgrims Perform Stoning Ritual as Hajj Nears Final Stages in Mecca

Thousands of Muslim pilgrims gathered near Mecca to perform the symbolic stoning ritual during Hajj, one of the most significant moments of the Islamic pilgrimage.

Pilgrims walked through the massive tent city after collecting pebbles overnight in Muzdalifah before throwing seven stones at each of three large pillars representing the devil.

Scenes from Mecca showed huge crowds moving around the Kaaba inside the Grand Mosque as Saudi authorities maintained heavy security and crowd control operations during one of the busiest days of the pilgrimage.

The ritual honors the story of Prophet Ibrahim, who according to Islamic tradition rejected the devil’s attempts to prevent him from obeying God’s command.

After completing the ceremony, many male pilgrims shaved their heads while female pilgrims trimmed a small part of their hair, symbolizing purification and the nearing completion of Hajj rites.

Many worshippers also took part in animal sacrifices associated with Eid al-Adha, the major Islamic festival celebrated by Muslims around the world.
