Ghana have named midfielder Thomas Partey in their provisional 28-man squad for the upcoming World Cup, even as he faces serious criminal charges in the United Kingdom.
The 32-year-old, who currently plays for Villarreal CF, has been charged with multiple offences and is scheduled to stand trial next year after denying all allegations. The case involves accusations linked to four women and is said to relate to incidents between 2020 and 2022.
Partey left Arsenal in 2025 after spending five seasons in north London and later moved to Spain to join Villarreal. Despite the legal proceedings, he has remained an important figure for the Ghana national team throughout their World Cup qualifying campaign, earning over 50 international caps.
Ghana’s head coach Carlos Queiroz included him in the squad announced on Tuesday, with the team expected to rely heavily on attacking players such as Antoine Semenyo and Iñaki Williams.
However, Ghana will be without Mohammed Kudus, who was left out due to injury. The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has been sidelined since January after suffering a quadriceps problem, with recovery delays preventing his return to full fitness.
Former Chelsea defender Abdul Rahman Baba has also been recalled to the national team setup for the first time since 2023.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, England, and Panama as they prepare for the tournament.
