The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that suspected Boko Haram members were arrested in Ilorin, describing the information as false and capable of causing unnecessary panic.
In a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the police clarified that no Boko Haram suspect was arrested anywhere in Kwara State, stressing that the viral claim was misleading.
The command explained that operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) only carried out a routine intelligence-led surveillance operation on Tuesday night in Ilorin, during which a truck conveying Fulani travellers was intercepted and professionally screened.
According to the police, the occupants of the vehicle were thoroughly checked, profiled, and searched, but no incriminating items, weapons, or security threats were found. The travellers reportedly stated they were in transit to Jigawa State and were later allowed to continue their journey after proper documentation.
The statement further noted that the operation was part of standard security procedures and not related to any terror-related arrest as being circulated online.
In a separate development, the command confirmed the arrest of three suspected armed robbers and vandals along the Asa Dam/Dangote Road axis of Ilorin during another intelligence-driven operation.
Police said the suspects were linked to a criminal group involved in vandalising solar-powered streetlights and carrying out robbery-related activities in parts of the metropolis. Items recovered from them included two locally made pistols, pliers, and suspected hard drugs.
Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, praised the intelligence efforts of the VCRU and assured residents that security agencies remain committed to curbing crime across the state.
He also urged the public to disregard fake news and avoid spreading unverified information that could disturb public peace.
