The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has selected Muhammad Dalhatu as its governorship candidate for Kano State after he defeated Mohammed Abacha, the eldest son of former Head of State General Sani Abacha, in a closely watched primary election.
The primary, held in Kano State, was conducted under the supervision of the party’s electoral committee chaired by Umar Hadejia. Officials described the process as peaceful, transparent, and compliant with PDP guidelines.
According to the official results, Dalhatu secured 2,233 votes, while Abacha polled 749 votes, falling significantly behind his opponent.
Declaring the outcome, Hadejia announced Dalhatu as the winner, stating that he had “scored the highest number of valid votes cast” and was therefore returned as the party’s flagbearer for the upcoming governorship election in Kano State.
The committee also commended delegates, party officials, and security agencies for maintaining order throughout the exercise and urged PDP members to unite ahead of the general elections.
This is not Mohammed Abacha’s first attempt at securing the party’s ticket. He previously contested in 2023 but lost after internal party disputes and legal battles involving rival factions. He also ran as a candidate in the 2019 Kano governorship election under a different platform.
The result now positions Muhammad Dalhatu as the PDP’s frontline candidate as political activities intensify in Kano State ahead of the next general election.
