Iran kept its hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stage alive after securing a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Belgium, thanks largely to an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.
The Iranian shot-stopper produced one of the best goalkeeping displays of the tournament, making seven crucial saves to deny Belgium throughout the match. His most remarkable moment came early in the second half when he pulled off a stunning one-handed save from close range to stop Maxim De Cuyper from scoring.
Beiranvand continued to frustrate the Belgian attack and made another vital save in the closing minutes to keep the score level.
Iran had opportunities to push for a historic victory, especially after Belgium was reduced to 10 men in the 66th minute. Defender Nathan Ngoy received a straight red card after fouling Mehdi Taremi while attempting to recover from a misplaced pass that could have sent the Iranian forward through on goal.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Belgium continued to create chances and finished the match with 23 shots. However, they were unable to find a way past Beiranvand, whose performance earned widespread praise.
Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei described the goalkeeper as one of the greatest in the country's football history and praised his intelligence, experience, and leadership on the field.
Although Iran could not find the winning goal, the team left the match encouraged by its performance and remains in contention to advance beyond the group stage for the first time in its World Cup history.
Midfielder Alireza Jahanbakhsh said the team believed it could have taken all three points but was pleased with the spirit and determination shown throughout the match.
The draw leaves both teams with work to do in their remaining group-stage fixtures, but Iran's hopes of making history remain firmly alive.
