Former MMA Star Lovethpatra Ekufu Launches Black African History Global Iconic Awards

Former Nigerian kickboxing and MMA champion Lovethpatra Ekufu has unveiled the inaugural Black African History Global Iconic Awards (BAHGIA), an initiative designed to celebrate African excellence, promote unity, and inspire future generations across the continent and the diaspora.

The maiden edition of the awards is scheduled to take place on July 5 at the Marriott Hotel in GRA, Ikeja, Lagos. According to Ekufu, who serves as president of BAHGIA, the platform was created to recognize outstanding Africans and people of African descent whose achievements often go unnoticed despite their significant contributions to society.

She explained that the awards aim to spotlight excellence in various sectors, including sports, politics, business, education, entertainment, arts, and community development. Ekufu also praised the organizing team, noting that the project became possible through collaboration and shared commitment to the vision.

The event will feature a daytime conference and an evening gala where winners across more than twenty categories will be honored. Guests from different parts of Africa and the global Black community are expected to attend.

BAHGIA Vice President Charles Ezerime said the organizers have worked closely with government institutions and relevant stakeholders to ensure a successful event. He emphasized that one of the initiative’s primary goals is to strengthen unity among Africans and people of African descent worldwide.

According to Ezerime, Nigeria was selected as the host country because of its importance and influence across Africa. He added that recognizing and celebrating successful Africans is essential in promoting positive stories and achievements despite the challenges facing the continent.

Head Strategist Olisa Chukwuma highlighted the role of sports in shaping the awards' vision, noting that Ekufu’s journey as an internationally recognized kickboxing champion inspired much of the initiative. He said sports, entertainment, and youth development remain key pillars of the project.

Board member Francis Emeka stated that the awards will also focus on encouraging young people to embrace education and pursue legitimate paths to success. He expressed concern over the growing belief among some youths that education has lost its value and said discussions during the conference will address issues such as insecurity, youth development, and the importance of learning.

Canada-based President of the Martin Luther King Awards, Pauline Christian, described Lagos as the ideal location for the event due to its cultural significance, creativity, and influence across Africa. She said the awards would serve as a bridge connecting Africa with its diaspora while promoting shared heritage and global African excellence.

Organizers remain confident that the inaugural Black African History Global Iconic Awards will establish a new platform for celebrating achievement, fostering collaboration, and inspiring future generations across Africa and beyond.
