Canada’s Historic World Cup Victory Overshadowed by Horror Injury to Ismael Kone

Canada celebrated a historic moment at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a dominant 6-0 victory over Qatar, securing the country's first-ever win at the tournament. However, the celebrations were overshadowed by a serious injury suffered by midfielder Ismael Kone.

Playing in front of a packed home crowd in Vancouver, Canada looked in complete control and had already built a 3-0 lead when disaster struck early in the second half. Kone was caught by a late challenge while attempting to play the ball, leaving him with a severe leg injury that visibly shocked players on both teams.

Medical staff rushed onto the field as teammates gathered around the injured midfielder. The incident sparked emotional scenes and a brief confrontation between players as tensions rose following the challenge. Kone was eventually carried off on a stretcher but managed to raise his thumb to supporters as he left the pitch.

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch later confirmed that Kone had been taken to hospital and would require surgery, effectively ending his World Cup campaign. Marsch described the midfielder as a key part of the team's spirit and admitted that the squad was deeply affected by the incident.

Despite the emotional setback, Canada remained focused and went on to score three more goals, completing a remarkable 6-0 victory. During the match, substitute Nathan Saliba paid tribute to Kone by holding up his teammate's shirt after finding the net.

Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo, who was sent off following the challenge, reportedly visited Canada's dressing room after the match to apologize. Marsch accepted the apology and said he did not believe there was any intention to cause such a serious injury.

The victory leaves Canada on the verge of reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in its history. After earning their first-ever World Cup point in a draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Canadians now need only one more point to guarantee a place in the last 32.

Following the final whistle, players celebrated their historic achievement with supporters inside the stadium, but thoughts remained with Kone. Marsch praised the unity and character of his squad, saying the team would continue to rally around their injured teammate as they pursue further success in the tournament.

Canada will now face Switzerland in their next group match, knowing a victory could secure top spot and continue their dream World Cup journey.
