The first flight carrying Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa arrived in Accra on Wednesday amid growing concerns over anti-immigrant tensions in the country.
The returnees were welcomed at the airport by Ghana’s foreign minister as patriotic songs played through the airport speakers during their arrival.
The evacuation follows rising fears of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa. Authorities say the move was aimed at protecting citizens who felt unsafe due to increasing hostility and unrest.
Government officials assured the evacuees of support and assistance as they resettle back home, while calls continue for calm and protection of migrants across the region.
