Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has unveiled a N650 billion appropriation bill for the 2026 fiscal year, describing it as a “Budget of Demonstration” that seeks to drive transformative development across the state. The budget, presented to the State House of Assembly on Wednesday, places a major emphasis on infrastructure, energy, and social welfare, with a notable tilt towards capital expenditure.

Out of the total N650 billion, N457.74 billion, representing 70.6%, has been earmarked for capital projects, signaling a robust investment in long-term development initiatives. Recurrent spending accounts for N192.89 billion, or 29.64% of the budget, covering operational costs and essential services. Governor Kefas explained that the funding will come from a combination of statutory revenue sources, including FAAC allocations, Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), grants, and capital receipts. To expand the state’s revenue base, the administration plans to strengthen digital revenue systems and explore opportunities in agriculture, mining, property, business, and tourism.

In terms of allocation, Roads and Transport emerges as the top priority with 19.84% of the budget, followed by Education and Skill Development at 15.98%. Health services will receive 6.19%, while Agriculture and Food Security are set to get 4.83%. Water and Sanitation is allocated 3.19%, and Security and Emergency Services account for 2.96%.

Governor Kefas also highlighted the administration’s commitment to energy development, pledging investments in solar mini-grids, hybrid rural electrification schemes, street lighting, and improved power supply for schools, hospitals, markets, and agro-processing hubs. These measures are aimed at fostering sustainable development and boosting the overall quality of life for residents.

Speaker of the House, John Bozena, praised the governor for presenting a budget aligned with fiscal guidelines and for demonstrating prudent management of state resources. He assured that the House of Assembly would work towards a swift passage of the bill, ensuring timely implementation of the proposed projects.

This budget reflects Taraba State’s forward-looking approach, emphasizing strategic investments that combine economic growth, infrastructure expansion, and social development, setting the stage for a transformative 2026 fiscal year.
