Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has delivered a stark warning to Nigerian football authorities, insisting that winning the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) cannot compensate for Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Speaking candidly on The Obi One Podcast, the ex-Chelsea midfielder described the World Cup miss as “an absolute shame” and called for urgent reforms within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Mikel argued that the disappointment is far too heavy to gloss over, emphasizing that administrative negligence has robbed Nigerian fans of the chance to witness their brightest talents on the world’s biggest football stage. “Does winning AFCON make it 100% okay? I don’t think so,” Mikel said. “We want to see ourselves in the World Cup. If we do not qualify, the NFF and the whole board have to go. You can’t keep repeating the same mistakes and expect different results.”
The football legend highlighted the personal cost to Nigeria’s players, pointing out that top stars in their prime, including world-class strikers, are being denied the opportunity to shine on the global stage. “It’s a shame that you can’t see a striker in his prime competing at the World Cup. Players like Haaland know what it means to play at the biggest stage. Our best African talent deserves the same. Competing, showcasing skills, scoring goals for Nigeria and Africa—that moment should never be lost due to poor administration,” he added.
Beyond the World Cup disappointment, Mikel stressed the urgent need for structural reforms ahead of the upcoming AFCON tournament. “Yes, it’s a short time to make changes before the Nations Cup, but those changes have to be made. The NFF must take responsibility for the failures and step aside if necessary,” he said.
He reiterated his long-standing view that the NFF board has failed in its core mission: guiding Nigeria to the World Cup. “They had a job to do. Get to the World Cup. And they messed it up. Their job is to take the country and the team to that stage, and they failed. Absolutely failed,” Mikel concluded, leaving no doubt that accountability is long overdue.
As Nigeria prepares for the AFCON, the comments from Mikel Obi are a clarion call for sweeping change, highlighting that while continental glory is celebrated, missing out on football’s grandest tournament is a wound that cannot simply be healed with trophies at home.
