The Federal Government has moved to reassure Nigerians following the abduction of female students from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The government says urgent steps are already in motion to bring the schoolgirls home safely.
In a statement released on Monday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, expressed deep concern over the incident and extended the government’s sympathy to the affected families. He noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed that the safety of every citizen — especially schoolchildren — remains a core responsibility of the Nigerian State.
The minister condemned the attack, describing it as a shocking act of violence against innocent young students. He also lamented the killing of school officials, calling their deaths a tragic blow to those who were only carrying out their lawful duties.
According to Idris, President Tinubu has directed security and intelligence agencies to immediately swing into action, locate the abducted girls, and ensure their safe return. He added that the government is determined to see that those behind the attack are tracked down and brought to justice.
The statement also highlighted the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen national security. Idris revealed that Nigeria is upgrading its military, police, and intelligence capabilities to better prevent such incidents and respond more swiftly when threats arise.
He further explained that Nigeria is deepening security cooperation with regional bodies such as ECOWAS, the African Union, and the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to tighten border security and dismantle terrorist and criminal networks operating across West and Central Africa.
Idris urged Nigerians to stay calm and trust the ongoing security operations, assuring the nation that all relevant agencies are fully mobilised and working tirelessly to resolve the situation.
The government, he stressed, remains firm in its commitment to protect every citizen and ensure schools across the country remain safe learning environments for all children.
