FG Seeks NIPR’s Help to Tackle Misinformation Amid Rising Insecurity

The Federal Government is rallying fresh support from the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) as it battles the growing wave of misinformation fueling fear and tension across the country. The appeal came during a dinner held in Abuja in honour of the Comptroller General of Customs, where top officials emphasized the critical role of accurate communication in stabilizing the nation’s security narrative.

At the event, the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Nkiruka Uzoko-Anite, stressed that Nigeria’s current security atmosphere has created widespread anxiety, making truth and transparency more essential than ever. She called on the NIPR to take the lead in coordinating factual communication nationwide, guiding institutions on how to communicate with empathy, clarity, and credibility. According to her, public trust in national institutions hinges on consistent and honest messaging.

She praised Comptroller General Bashir Adeniyi for pushing impactful reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service. Uzoko-Anite also highlighted his recent election as head of the World Customs Organization, describing it as a global endorsement of Nigeria’s leadership in customs administration.

Minister of Information Mohammed Idris echoed this sentiment, urging Nigerians to unite in shaping a positive image for the country. He disclosed that foreign media houses have been reaching out to verify reports about kidnappings in Agwara, assuring that the government is already working to secure the release of those affected. Idris noted that despite progress in the economy and rising investor confidence, misinformation continues to paint the country in a negative light.

He emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is accelerating efforts to tackle insecurity and strengthen national stability.

Earlier in the evening, NIPR President Dr. Ike Neliaku encouraged public officials to use their offices as tools for restoring Nigeria’s global image through quality service. He affirmed the Institute’s commitment to supporting government initiatives aimed at promoting transparency, professionalism, and a more accurate representation of the nation.
