Emotional Jimmy Kimmel Returns to Late-Night, Denies Making Light of Charlie Kirk’s Killing

New York (AP) — Jimmy Kimmel made an emotional return to late-night television on Tuesday, addressing the controversy that led to a nearly weeklong suspension of his show. Speaking in a heartfelt monologue, Kimmel insisted he never intended to make light of the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

“I have no illusions about changing anyone’s mind,” Kimmel told his audience, appearing close to tears. “But I do want to make something clear, because it’s important to me as a human — you understand that it was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it.”

Kimmel clarified that his earlier remarks were not meant to blame any political group, but some viewers had found them “ill-timed or unclear.” Despite the criticism, he stopped short of issuing a formal apology. Instead, he pushed back against two major ABC affiliates — Sinclair and Nexstar — which had refused to air his show, calling their actions “un-American” and “not legal.”

Free Speech Debate

The incident sparked a wider national debate about freedom of speech, media censorship, and the ability of political leaders, including former President Donald Trump, to influence the words of journalists, commentators, and comedians.

ABC suspended Kimmel last Wednesday after backlash over his remarks, but the network reinstated him following criticism of parent company Disney.

Support From Allies and Critics

Kimmel expressed gratitude to fellow late-night hosts, former colleagues, and even critics who defended his right to speak, including Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

“It takes courage for them to speak out against this administration,” Kimmel said. “They did and they deserve credit for it.”

Tribute to Kirk’s Widow

The most emotional moment of the night came when Kimmel praised Kirk’s widow, Erika, who publicly forgave her husband’s killer.

“That is an example we should follow,” Kimmel said. “If you believe in the teachings of Jesus as I do, there it was … a selfless act of grace, forgiveness from a grieving widow. It touched me deeply. And I hope it touches many.”

While admitting he was initially angry at his suspension, Kimmel ultimately praised ABC for bringing him back on air, acknowledging the risk they took in doing so
