Embrace Digital Tools for Effective Governance, SGF Tells SSGs

Nigeria’s Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has called on Secretaries to State Governments (SSGs) to embrace the use of digital tools in governance. Speaking in Jos at the first 2025 SGF-SSGs Forum, he stressed that technology is now the backbone of transparency, accountability, and efficient service delivery.

The SGF described SSGs as the “engine rooms” of state administrations, playing a central role in coordinating policies, ensuring decision-making efficiency, and driving government agendas.

“Governance in the 21st century demands innovation, agility, and responsiveness. By embracing digital tools, we can ensure greater transparency, accountability, and efficiency in delivering services to Nigerians,” Akume said.

He highlighted the need for modern systems such as data management platforms, analytics tools, and digital communication channels, which would help states strengthen collaboration with the federal government.

Akume also urged SSGs to:

  • Build institutional capacity.

  • Invest in digital literacy and continuous training.

  • Adopt global best practices in governance.

He warned that governments that fail to adapt to technology risk being left behind, especially as citizens become more informed, connected, and demanding of accountability.

The SGF further emphasized the importance of security coordination, charging SSGs to support ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity nationwide.

SSGs present at the forum welcomed the call, noting that digital adoption would not only fast-track development but also improve citizens’ trust in government.
