2027: Buhari’s Loyalists Rally Behind Atiku, Criticize APC Leadership

ABUJA – In a major twist ahead of the 2027 general elections, loyalists of former President Muhammadu Buhari have pledged their support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, signaling growing divisions within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The declaration came after a private meeting in Abuja, where state chairmen of the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC)—Buhari’s original political party—met with Atiku at his residence. Discussions centered on building a new political alliance to challenge the APC in 2027.

Atiku, who is currently spearheading coalition-building efforts under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), welcomed the delegation, describing their move as a significant boost to his plans to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.

Buhari’s Base Shifts Ground

The CPC bloc, considered Buhari’s most loyal political base, voiced dissatisfaction with the APC leadership, accusing it of abandoning the ideals that brought the coalition to power in 2015.

One of the leaders told Atiku:

“We are the true followers of Buhari, and we are here today, Sir. President Muhammadu Buhari has left an unprecedented mark in the history of this country, and we will not allow it to be lost. We are now ready to merge into the new political platform that God has chosen for us, appointing you as the leader, that platform now being the ADC.”

Another CPC stalwart drew a sharp contrast between Buhari’s years in office and the current administration, insisting that the founding values of the movement were no longer visible in government.

Atiku’s Response

In his remarks, Atiku hailed the group’s decision as a turning point:

“I am particularly delighted to receive you today. This meeting represents a continuation of your journey and struggles. With your support, we will work to form a government that reflects inclusivity and service to the people, committed to peace and unity across Nigeria.”

He also urged the CPC loyalists to mobilize their supporters to participate actively in the ongoing voter registration exercise, stressing its critical role in determining the 2027 outcome.

Analysts React

Political observers view the Abuja meeting as one of the earliest signs of a major realignment in Nigerian politics, potentially as consequential as the formation of the APC in 2013, which later unseated the PDP in 2015.

With Buhari’s loyalists shifting allegiance and Atiku positioning himself as the rallying point of the opposition, the stage appears set for a turbulent and highly competitive road to the 2027 elections.
