FirstBank Backs Imo State’s OKOBI Initiative to Boost Job Creation

FirstBank has announced its support for the Imo State Government’s One Kindred One Business Initiative (OKOBI), a community-driven entrepreneurship programme aimed at creating jobs, expanding financial inclusion, and promoting sustainable wealth creation across the state.

The initiative, introduced by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma in 2023, encourages groups of people within the same community to establish and register businesses together. By operating as formal business entities, these groups can gain easier access to financing, strengthen their operations, and contribute to economic growth.

Since its launch, the programme has registered more than 600 businesses with about 20,000 members and is targeting the creation or support of 100,000 jobs within three years.

FirstBank said its partnership with the initiative reflects its long-standing commitment to supporting small and medium-sized enterprises and improving access to financial services for Nigerians.

Chief Executive Officer of FirstBank Group, Olusegun Alebiosu, said the programme demonstrates how community cooperation can be transformed into real economic opportunities. He noted that supporting group-owned businesses will help create a more inclusive economy while promoting entrepreneurship and long-term wealth creation.

Chief Economic Adviser to the Imo State Government, Professor Kenneth Amaeshi, also praised the initiative, describing it as an effective response to unemployment and the challenges of informal businesses. He said the programme has already delivered encouraging results and urged more private organisations to support similar initiatives that empower communities through collective enterprise.

The partnership is expected to strengthen local businesses, encourage entrepreneurship, and contribute to economic development across Imo State while creating more employment opportunities for residents.
