Ogun Government, Olisa of Ijebu Deny Viral Letter Naming Five Princes for Awujale’s Throne

The Ogun State Government and the Olisa of Ijebu have distanced themselves from a viral letter circulating on social media that allegedly listed five princes as candidates for the vacant Awujale of Ijebuland stool.

The controversy follows the passing of the former Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who died in July last year at the age of 91 after spending 65 years on the throne. His reign was one of the longest and most influential in Nigeria’s traditional history.

In separate reactions, the Ogun State Government and the Olisa of Ijebu described the circulating document as unofficial and misleading. They stated that the process for selecting a new Awujale is guided by established traditional procedures and legal provisions, urging the public to disregard unverified information.

Authorities emphasized that no official announcement has been made regarding the selection of a successor and warned against the spread of false reports capable of creating confusion among the people of Ijebuland.

The government further assured residents that the succession process would be conducted transparently and in accordance with tradition, while stakeholders continue consultations on the emergence of the next Awujale.

The development comes amid growing public interest in who will succeed the late monarch, whose leadership left a lasting impact on Ijebuland and Nigeria as a whole.
