Abia Government Says Sports Development Strategy Is Delivering Results

The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to sports development, describing its approach over the past three years as deliberate, strategic, and focused on nurturing young talents across the state.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Obilor Ananaba, said the government has concentrated on grassroots sports development, athlete training, and creating opportunities for young people to succeed in various sporting disciplines.

According to the commissioner, sustainable sports growth requires patience, consistency, and continuous investment. He noted that the administration has steadily built a strong foundation through innovative programmes, talent discovery initiatives, and support for athletes.

Ananaba explained that the government's goal is to ensure that children and young people across Abia have access to sporting activities that allow them to discover and develop their natural abilities. He added that attention has been given to sports such as boxing, athletics, badminton, volleyball, table tennis, and wrestling.

He credited Governor Alex Otti's support and funding for helping the ministry sustain grassroots programmes, sponsor competitions, and create pathways for talented athletes to progress in their careers.

The commissioner said the stakeholders’ meeting was organized to review achievements, identify challenges, and develop strategies for the future of sports in the state. He also revealed plans to establish sports association boards that will focus on talent identification, athlete development, coaching, competition participation, partnerships, sponsorship, and fundraising.

Director of Sports, Obioma George, urged sports administrators and stakeholders to work together to strengthen sports development across the state. He expressed confidence that greater collaboration would position Abia as one of Nigeria’s leading states in sports development.

George also called on sports associations to intensify efforts in discovering and nurturing talented athletes at the grassroots level.

Meanwhile, Abia State is hosting the South-East Boxing Championship, with athletes from across the region already arriving for the competition. The championship is expected to begin with boxing bouts scheduled to commence on Wednesday.

The state government believes that continued investment in sports will not only produce future champions but also promote healthy living, discipline, teamwork, and positive engagement among young people.
