Tragedy on Jos–Bauchi Road: 10 Killed in Multiple-Vehicle Crash

A devastating multiple-vehicle road accident claimed the lives of at least 10 people in the early hours of Tuesday, December 23, 2025, along the Jos–Bauchi Road, near a military checkpoint on the outskirts of Jos, Plateau State. The horrifying incident involved four vehicles: two articulated trucks and two Ford Galaxy minibuses, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Plateau State Sector Command.

The crash occurred around 12:12 a.m., and a total of 19 people were involved—17 males and two females. Tragically, 10 adult males died instantly at the scene, while the remaining occupants sustained varying degrees of injuries. Emergency responders quickly moved the injured to nearby medical facilities, including the General Hospital in Miyanbarkate, Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), and the Plateau State Specialist Hospital, where they received immediate medical attention.

Authorities reported that eight of the deceased were deposited at the morgues of the Plateau State Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital, while the remaining two bodies were claimed by officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for burial arrangements.

The rescue and recovery operation was a coordinated effort involving personnel from the FRSC, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian military, and members of the local community, whose swift response helped manage the aftermath of the tragedy.

Preliminary investigations suggest that excessive speed and reckless driving, resulting in a loss of vehicle control, were the primary causes of the accident. Corps Commander Olajide Mogaji, Plateau State Sector Commander of the FRSC, expressed deep concern, highlighting that this accident occurred barely 12 days after a similar crash claimed the lives of eight students from the University of Jos.

In a public statement released by the command’s Public Education Officer, Superintendent Route Commander Peter Longsan, Mogaji commended the prompt and coordinated response of security agencies and community members during the rescue efforts. He also issued a stern reminder to all motorists: avoid night travel, dangerous driving behaviors, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, and driving while fatigued or unwell, as these remain the leading causes of fatal road accidents.

Members of the public are encouraged to prioritize personal safety and to report road emergencies immediately via the FRSC toll-free number, 122.

The tragic crash serves as a stark reminder of the persistent dangers on Nigerian roads and underscores the urgent need for responsible driving, stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, and community vigilance to prevent further loss of life.
