The global gaming community has been rocked by the sudden death of Vince Zampella, the legendary video game developer and co-creator of the Call of Duty franchise, who died in a fatal car crash in the United States. He was 55.
According to reports confirmed by Electronic Arts (EA), Zampella lost his life on Sunday after a Ferrari he was traveling in crashed on the Angeles Crest Highway in Los Angeles, California. Local authorities said the vehicle veered off the road for reasons yet unknown, slammed into a concrete barrier, and became fully engulfed in flames. Zampella and another passenger were both killed at the scene.
EA described his death as “an unimaginable loss,” paying tribute to a man whose fingerprints are all over modern gaming. The company said Zampella’s influence stretched far beyond individual titles, shaping the entire landscape of interactive entertainment and inspiring generations of developers and players worldwide.
Footage circulating on social media showed the aftermath of the crash, with the wreckage severely mangled and consumed by fire, underscoring the severity of the accident that claimed one of gaming’s most influential minds.
Vince Zampella’s career reads like a greatest-hits album of the shooter genre. Starting out in the 1990s, he rose through the ranks as a game designer before co-founding Infinity Ward in 2002. Just a year later, the studio released the first Call of Duty, a title that would go on to become one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, selling over half a billion copies worldwide and attracting more than 100 million monthly active players.
After Infinity Ward was acquired by Activision, Zampella later exited the company and, in 2010, founded Respawn Entertainment. The studio delivered hit after hit, including Titanfall, Apex Legends, and the Star Wars Jedi series. Respawn’s success eventually led to its acquisition by EA in 2017, where Zampella took on an even bigger leadership role.
At EA, he was tasked with reviving the Battlefield franchise—Call of Duty’s longtime rival. Under his guidance, the series regained momentum, and Battlefield 6 recently set a new sales record, cementing his reputation as a master architect of first-person shooter games.
Tributes have poured in from across the industry. Respawn Entertainment described him as “a titan and legend,” whose leadership and creative vision would be felt for generations. Video game journalist and The Game Awards co-creator Geoff Keighley called Zampella “a gamer at heart” and a rare executive who trusted talent and gave creators the freedom to build something great.
Keighley added that while Zampella had already shaped some of the most influential games ever made, it felt like his greatest creation was still ahead of him—a future now heartbreakingly cut short.
Vince Zampella leaves behind a legacy carved into gaming history: franchises that defined eras, studios that nurtured talent, and millions of players whose love for games was shaped by his vision. The controller may be set down, but the impact? That respawns forever.
