The governments of the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have officially joined forces in a major international push to tackle the escalating wave of visa scams targeting hopeful travellers, students, and jobseekers worldwide. This powerful alliance, unveiled under the banner #FightingVisaFraud during International Fraud Awareness Week (16–22 November), marks a rare level of cooperation between the three nations—one driven by a shared urgency to confront a criminal industry draining victims of millions and exposing them to serious dangers.
According to a joint statement released by the diplomatic missions on Monday, the campaign grew out of discussions at the Five Country Ministerial, reflecting a united front against increasingly sophisticated fraud networks. These criminal groups, the envoys warned, are exploiting people’s aspirations by peddling false promises of guaranteed visas, fake overseas job offers, and “express” processing—usually for suspiciously high fees.
Victims often discover the truth too late: denied visa applications, emptied savings, shattered plans, and in the worst cases, entanglement in exploitation or trafficking rings. Officials emphasised that the pattern of deception is remarkably similar across all three countries’ immigration systems.
British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, captured the emotional toll of these schemes, noting that “visa fraud destroys dreams and devastates families.” He stressed the need for applicants to stick to official channels, carefully verify all advice, and report any shady activity. Montgomery reaffirmed that genuine applications are welcome—but fraud comes with heavy consequences, including travel bans of up to 10 years.
Canadian High Commissioner Pasquale Salvaggio echoed this stance, calling the collaboration a reflection of the countries’ shared values and long-standing commitment to protecting people from exploitation. He underlined that the campaign aims to maintain fair and secure immigration systems, ensuring that genuine travellers, workers, and students can access legitimate pathways without fear.
As part of the awareness drive, the missions urged applicants to be vigilant:
– Avoid unofficial agents or advisers whose credentials cannot be verified.
– Watch out for inflated charges, pressure tactics, and shortcuts that bypass established procedures.
– Reject any promise of a “guaranteed visa”—because no one can offer that.
The embassies also highlighted the severe penalties linked to visa fraud: visa denials, decade-long travel restrictions, irrecoverable financial losses, possible criminal charges, and increased vulnerability to trafficking networks. Law enforcement agencies across all three countries are actively identifying and pursuing offenders behind these scams.
To support the public, the missions will share official guidance, safety tips, and alerts on their social media platforms. Applicants can also find reliable information on government websites such as gov.uk for the UK and Canada.ca for Canadian immigration services. Suspected fraud targeting UK-bound applicants can be reported directly to Action Fraud.
Though the campaign is jointly coordinated, each country will roll out its activities according to its national framework. But the message remains the same across borders: visa fraud is a global threat, and the only safe path is through official, regulated channels. The UK, Canada, and Australia continue to urge the public to stay informed, stay cautious, and refuse to trust anyone offering shortcuts, guaranteed approvals, or fast-tracked visas in exchange for payment.
