Nigeria’s Super Falcons have once again stamped their authority on African football, being named the 2025 CAF Women’s National Team of the Year at the prestigious CAF Awards held on Wednesday, November 19, at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Rabat, Morocco. This accolade crowns a year of unparalleled success for the team, highlighting their dominance, resilience, and record-extending achievements on the continent.
The award comes on the heels of a sensational campaign at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where the Super Falcons captured their 10th continental title, further cementing their status as Africa’s most decorated women’s national team. Under the strategic leadership of head coach Justin Madugu, Nigeria delivered commanding performances throughout the tournament. The team cruised through the group stage with emphatic victories over Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria, maintaining an impeccable defensive record by not conceding a single goal.
Nigeria carried this momentum into the knockout stages with a mix of clinical precision and sheer determination. The Falcons dismantled Zambia with a resounding 5–0 win in the quarterfinals before edging out South Africa 2–1 in a nail-biting semifinal to secure a place in the final against host nation Morocco. The final proved to be a dramatic showcase of the team’s fighting spirit. Despite falling 2–0 within the first 24 minutes, Nigeria rallied magnificently in the second half, netting three goals in a 24-minute span to turn the match around and claim the championship in breathtaking fashion.
The team’s stellar performances also brought individual accolades. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade earned a nomination for CAF Women’s Player of the Year, while goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was shortlisted for Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year, reflecting the depth of talent within the squad.
With another record-breaking year, the Super Falcons have not only reaffirmed Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football but have also inspired a fresh generation of aspiring female footballers across the continent. Their remarkable achievements continue to elevate the profile of women’s football in Africa, making 2025 a year to remember in Nigerian sporting history.
