Tragedy struck in the Ikorodu area of Lagos on Sunday, November 16, 2025, as a soldier deployed for internal security duty lost his life after being attacked by a mentally unstable individual. The incident, which has shocked residents and sparked conversations across social media, underscores the risks faced by military personnel while maintaining peace in volatile situations.
According to a statement from the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, signed by Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Musa Yahaya, the soldier had been deployed to the Imota area of Ikorodu to help manage a chaotic situation. While attempting to de-escalate tensions, the soldier was struck on the head with a heavy log by the attacker, resulting in fatal injuries.
The incident was partially captured in a video that went viral online. The footage showed the soldier lying lifeless in a pool of blood, while the attacker, dressed in tattered clothing, was also seen on the ground. Early assumptions suggested the attacker may have used a firearm, but the Army clarified that the fatal blow came from the heavy log, not the soldier’s weapon.
Lt. Col. Yahaya’s statement detailed the sequence of events:
“Without prejudice to the ongoing investigation into the incident, it is necessary to provide preliminary information on the circumstances surrounding the incident. On November 16, 2025, at about 4 pm, one of the soldiers deployed for internal security duty in the Imota area of Ikorodu, while attempting to de-escalate a chaotic situation, was attacked by a mentally unstable individual. The attacker struck the soldier on the head with a heavy log, causing severe injury.
The situation was swiftly brought under control by other soldiers at the scene, who neutralised the attacker and recovered the soldier’s weapon. The injured soldier was evacuated to Ikorodu General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was subsequently buried according to Islamic rites, with the acting commanding officer and other officers of the unit in attendance.”
The Army extended its condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the fallen soldier, recognizing his dedication and service to the nation. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack has been launched to ensure clarity and accountability.
The 81 Division also called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to the relevant authorities. In addition, the statement appealed for responsible reporting, emphasizing that premature or misleading information could hinder the ongoing investigation.
The tragic loss highlights the unpredictable nature of security duties in urban areas and serves as a somber reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers in maintaining public safety.
