Police Urge Calm as Kogi Command Dismisses Viral Claims of Bandit Attacks

The Kogi State Police Command has called on residents to stay calm and ignore alarming social media posts claiming that bandits are preparing to attack communities in the eastern part of the state. According to the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi, the widely circulated messages are nothing more than false alarms with no evidence to support them.

In a statement released in Lokoja by the command’s spokesperson, CSP William Ovye-Aya, the police leadership emphasized that the reports are “unverifiable” and lack any element of truth. The commissioner stressed that the command has been proactive, placing serious attention on security issues and tightening surveillance across the state.

To reinforce safety, CP Kankarofi has deployed multiple tactical units — including the Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Unit, Quick Response Squad, and intelligence teams — to strategic zones. Additional security assets have also been stationed across vulnerable areas to prevent any unforeseen threats and respond swiftly to emergencies.

The command urged residents to avoid spreading unverified claims, noting that misinformation can trigger unnecessary fear and disrupt public peace. Instead, they encouraged the public to seek updates only from official and credible sources.

Kankarofi appealed for stronger cooperation between citizens, the police, and other security agencies, reminding residents that maintaining peace is a collective duty. He encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity immediately, stressing that community vigilance remains a crucial pillar in keeping the state secure
