Kebbi School Attack: UNICEF Demands Immediate Release of 25 Abducted Students

In a shocking escalation of violence against educational institutions in Northwest Nigeria, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has strongly condemned the recent attack on a Government Girls School in Maga, Kebbi State. The assault, which occurred earlier this week, tragically claimed the life of the school’s Vice-Principal and saw at least 25 students abducted.

In a statement released on Tuesday, UNICEF described the attack as a heartbreaking reminder of the growing threats facing children in regions affected by conflict. The agency emphasized that no child should ever be put at risk simply for pursuing an education.

“This tragic incident is yet another stark reminder of the urgent need to protect children, schools, and the personnel they rely upon to learn safely,” UNICEF stated. “We stand with the affected community at this difficult time. Our heartfelt condolences go to those who have lost their loved ones, and we wish a full recovery for those injured.”

The organization has called for the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted students, urging security agencies, local leaders, and community actors to take all necessary steps to ensure their safe return. UNICEF underscored that attacks on students, school staff, and educational facilities are a violation of international law, and stressed that those responsible must be held accountable according to both national and international standards.

UNICEF also reminded the Nigerian government of its obligations under the Safe Schools Declaration, which the country endorsed in 2015. The declaration sets out measures to protect schools as safe zones, guaranteeing uninterrupted learning even amid conflict.

The agency further highlighted its ongoing collaboration with government bodies, civil society organizations, and local communities to strengthen child protection systems and create safe, inclusive learning environments. However, UNICEF stressed that these systems need urgent reinforcement to prevent further tragedies and to ensure that children can attend school without fear.

This latest attack in Kebbi adds to a worrying trend of violence targeting schools in parts of Nigeria, raising concerns about the safety of children and the stability of educational services in conflict-prone areas. UNICEF’s call reflects an urgent need for coordinated action to safeguard students and educational institutions across the country.
