The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly debunked speculations that its long-awaited national convention may be postponed, insisting that all arrangements are intact and the event will take place this weekend as earlier announced.
Speaking in Abuja during an exclusive interview, the party’s National Financial Secretary, Daniel Woyengikuro, dismissed claims from individuals he described as “self-styled acting chairmen,” stressing that their comments do not reflect the position or strength of the party.
Woyengikuro stated that the PDP remains united under its legitimate leadership and that no internal distraction is strong enough to disrupt the convention. According to him, the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) had already approved the full timetable for the convention during its last meeting, and every stage of the preparation has followed that directive without deviation.
“At the last NEC meeting, the timetable was released for the process leading to the convention, and that process has been ongoing. The convention is this weekend — Saturday and Sunday,” he said.
He criticised those raising doubts over the event, arguing that they are operating outside the recognised leadership structure of the PDP. Woyengikuro emphasised that their titles and claims carry no official weight within the party.
“Who are the members saying it will not hold? Some people who call themselves acting chairmen. Thank God you said they call themselves so. You know the truth,” he remarked, maintaining that such individuals are only seeking attention.
Woyengikuro also noted that disagreements are normal in any major political organisation, stressing that a few dissenting voices cannot override the collective direction of the party. He compared the situation to national politics to underline his point.
“In a crowd, two or three people may have dissenting opinions. That doesn’t mean anything. Did everybody in Nigeria vote for Tinubu? No. Is Tinubu not the President? Yes,” he said.
Reassuring party members, the Bayelsa-born chieftain insisted that the PDP leadership remains fully in control, while urging delegates and supporters to ignore rumours designed to create confusion ahead of the convention.
“They call themselves acting chairmen; so what? Don’t we have leadership in the party? Yes, we do, and everyone knows who the leadership is,” he stated.
Woyengikuro called on members nationwide to remain focused and committed, reiterating that the convention will hold as scheduled.
“Our convention is holding, please,” he declared, urging the public to disregard contrary statements circulating within political circles.
