Ruben Amorim is approaching his first anniversary in charge of Manchester United with a mix of reflection and unwavering focus. The Portuguese manager, who marked his debut with a 1-1 draw against Ipswich, is preparing for Monday’s clash against Everton at Old Trafford, a milestone that highlights both the challenges and progress of his tenure.
Despite United currently sitting seventh in the Premier League and riding a five-game unbeaten streak, Amorim is adamant that the league table is of little significance. Speaking to reporters, he emphasized the unpredictable nature of English football: “It doesn’t matter. In our league, it doesn’t matter. The table doesn’t matter as everything is so tight. That is irrelevant. If you know the history of our team, we never know where the difficult games are. That is completely irrelevant in the Premier League.”
Amorim’s perspective reflects his commitment to consistency over complacency. He recognizes that no matter the fixtures ahead, every match demands total focus. “We have to take that into account and play every game like it is the last one or the first one,” he said, underlining the importance of approaching each contest with intensity and preparation.
Much has changed at Manchester United since that initial Ipswich encounter last November. Marcus Rashford, who scored early in the 1-1 draw, is now among five starters who no longer feature in the squad, symbolizing the evolution within the team. Amorim recalls his early days with a mixture of excitement and realism: “The first thinking was about thinking the environment is completely different in the Premier League, and I was excited with that. Right away I knew we would struggle with some things. But it was that feeling of, yes, this is the best league in the world. It is maybe the best club in the world, but at the same time it is a big job and it is going to require a lot of work.”
Looking ahead, Amorim aims to cultivate a more dominant, competitive, and technically adept team. “Yes, I expect a team now with more control and with more dominance, playing better football, and the most important thing is we are more competitive in every way,” he said. His approach signals a clear message: results are important, but process, preparation, and performance are paramount in navigating the unpredictable waters of the Premier League.
