As the festive Ember season approaches, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has issued a strict ban on the sale and use of firecrackers and other unauthorized pyrotechnics across Abuja. The measure is part of proactive security strategies aimed at curbing crimes such as kidnapping, robbery, and other offenses that often spike during the holiday period.
The FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed that Commissioner of Police, CP Miller Dantawaye, has advised residents to completely avoid purchasing, selling, or using firecrackers and explosives this season. She explained that while fireworks are often associated with celebration, they pose significant safety risks, including injuries, fire outbreaks, and public panic. Beyond physical dangers, firecrackers can also serve as cover for criminal activities, providing a convenient distraction that threatens community safety.
Adeh further highlighted that law enforcement officers have been instructed to actively enforce the ban, with violators subject to arrest and prosecution. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any illegal sale or use of pyrotechnics to the nearest police station or through the FCT Police emergency lines at 08032003913 or 08068587311.
The move underscores the police’s commitment to ensuring a safe and peaceful festive season for all Abuja residents, protecting vulnerable members of the community from preventable accidents and crime.
