Nigeria – The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has lashed out at individuals who openly criticize President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on social media, describing Nigerians as “fortunate” to have a leader who upholds the rule of law.
Wike, who spoke on Thursday during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of Arterial Road N1, linking Wuye District to Ring Road II in Abuja, condemned what he termed the culture of “abusing the President with impunity.”
“This is a country where somebody on social media will say Mr President is a criminal; nothing will happen. You are lucky you have a President that believes in the rule of law. Continue to be lucky. There are those you will meet that you won’t be lucky again,” Wike warned.
On Resident Doctors’ Grievances
Responding to concerns raised by resident doctors who recently threatened protests over unpaid allowances and poor health infrastructure, Wike acknowledged demonstrations as part of democracy but cautioned against what he called “blackmail.”
“The SSS called me that people said they will demonstrate, that we are paying attention to roads and not health. Demonstration is allowed everywhere, but nobody will blackmail me or stop me from doing what I think is right,” he said.
The minister noted that the 2025 FCT budget has earmarked N25 billion for capital projects in the health sector, assuring that outstanding issues on doctors’ employment and allowances would be addressed in due time.
“If the Permanent Secretary, Treasury, brings the bill now, they will be paid. But everything must follow due process,” Wike stressed.
On Road Projects in Abuja
Highlighting the significance of the ongoing road project, Wike emphasized that it was not for personal or political gain but for the overall development of Abuja.
“The project is to expand economic opportunities and improve the welfare of residents. No one can stop me from holding this occasion today, not one,” he declared.
